①这首诗的作者是一位普通的美国妇女，她的丈夫应征去了越南战场，后来不幸阵亡了。这个噩耗对她无疑是一种心灵上最痛苦的折磨，但是她不得不面对现实，但丈夫生前对她的爱一幕幕涌现，使她决定终身守寡，最后年老病逝。有一天，她的女儿在整理遗物时发现了母亲当年写给父亲的这一首未曾发出去的情诗。
